Today we had several clients call in regards to getting a title for there vintage car, one was a 1968 GTO ,another was a 1942 Ford that had been in a field for 30 years, the others were all 1950 to 1955 in different degrees of disrepair.It got me thinking, what is a vintage automobile? One definition is "representing the high quality of a past time". With a broad definition like this all cars can be classified as vintage vehicles for either age or quality.

If you are from New York here are some hints to get you started on applying for a title thru the DMV. This process can be very time consuming and there is no guarantee after you follow all there steps you will get a title for your vehicle

Whether you just like to tinker or you're an automobile design aficionado who's created a special vehicle from scratch, all custom or modified motor vehicles, motorcycles, and trailers must be evaluated by the Department of Motor Vehicles before they can be registered and used on New York's public highways. Such vehicles include homemade or kit automobiles, trucks, or motorcycles as well as other vehicles with special construction, equipment, or characteristics.

Registering a homemade or custom-built vehicle can be a little complicated, and not all applicants are successful: The vehicle needs to be examined and receipts submitted, the DMV might need to issue a vehicle identification number (VIN) for it, it will need a standard safety inspection, and more.

To help you manage the process, the DMV will send you an application package by mail that contains complete information about homemade vehicles, a checklist of instructions, a list of required vehicle equipment, and form MV-272.1 (application for VIN). This last form, which you might not need, is not available online.

The DMV may ask to examine the vehicle, and will almost certainly do so if it is assigning a VIN to it. You'll receive a notice in the mail indicating the date, time, and location of the inspection. You will need to bring all original proofs of purchase, sales receipts, or tax receipts for the vehicle itself or major parts used to make the vehicle; the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (MCO) or any other manufacturer's statement; the title certificate and other proofs of ownership; and any other documents that show the source of the vehicle or its major parts.

California law describes a custom-built car as one that's "built for private use, not for resale, and is not constructed by a licensed manufacturer or re manufacturer." Basically, a custom-built car is one you built yourself. These types of cars are usually built from kits, or parts taken from salvage vehicles and other cars.

Restored cars, even if you manufactured parts, aren't custom-built. Modification to body, engine, vehicle systems, or the vehicle's interior also don't qualify.

Because custom-built cars are not your typical vehicles, the registration process is a little more involved than with a regular car.

A little news about titles that are held by finance companies after bankruptcy. Lately we have had several cases where our client claimed bankruptcy, and the finance company keep the title but never picked up the vehicle. There is now a way to get the finance company to release the title into the clients name. You can get the title for the vehicle with out paying the finance company because they already forgave the loan and it is a form of lender fraud (blackmail) if they do not return the title in a timely fashion . Well summer is here and at Getnewtitle.com the boat titling specialist are getting busier all the time. We had a fellow from Kansas call with a 1994 21 foot SeaRay who had picked up the boat at a foreclosure action of a house back in December. Here it is May and he wants the title in a week. The lesson here is, a little planning and he would of had his title 2 months ago now he has to wait the 4 weeks like every one else. I wonder if the sun is out in Kansas.
